Topic: Our panel will share their insights about single-family zoning: what it is, what it does, and how we can respond to it.
Single-family zoning has gotten a lot of attention lately in the headlines. We see politicians, housing experts, and activists making, at times, wildly different claims about it. These people probably agree on one thing: zoning and land use codes fundamentally shape our cities and towns. Invisible as they may seem, these laws control the physical shape and locations of our homes. They have also deeply impacted communities in our neighborhoods.
Despite the truly profound implications of single-family zoning, it is not always well understood. How has it been an ongoing source of racial inequity, exclusion, and lack of affordability? Even if we have some clear answers, how does it eventually change?
